It's easy!
Tools like Technorati, Feedstar etc constantly monitor the internet. If anyone writes the word
"Liuzhou" anywhere on the internet I am informed almost immediately through RSS feeds.
So when they put up my site, they appeared!
Now that I have mentioned LZ, this post will be reported to me!

Sorry, late response!
There are not that many. It is not often that anything happens here which is important enough to
be reported internationally, using pinyin.
Getting reports on 柳州 would be a different matter.

I just did a search on this website and also in google of the web at large and did not find
anything that was helpful or conclusive re: ocr software in 2006. Can someone provide some
definitive information? I would love to be able to scan an article, import it into a spreadsheet
(1 character per cell), sort and then delete the duplicated words and look up the words I don't
know.
Any ideas?

I can't help with the ocr part, but once you get the text, you can just paste it into adsotrans
advanced/ vocab. This will generate a vocabulary list without duplicates. Also, your sort will
split up 2-character words which would leave you high and dry.

Also...I cannot read Chinese yet. Is there some english version of the urls referred to in the

Thanks for your help!

You'd best do a google search for an English version.

Varies browser to browser. If you want to process a larger document, put it online somewhere and
put the URL in the box on the advanced page. As long as it begins with "http://" the software will
recognize that you are giving it a remote webpage and process it accordingly.
There is a limit to the size of files that Adso will parse when handling remote URLs, but the bar
is set pretty high.

Who is interested in a Pimsleur ZDT Flashcard project?
I have the written transcript and put the lessons 1-10 in the ZDT format to be used with the ZDT
flashcard software.
http://zdt.sourceforge.net
I will work on it and put more lessons into the ZDT format. Feel free to download the attachement
and import it to ZDT.

I am still working on it. Problem is that I could not find a Pimsleur wordlist.
http://www.ezmandarin.com has only the first sentences of each lessons, but not a wordlist for
each lossons.
http://marcelnijman.demon.nl/mandarin/pimsleur/ has a wordlist, but is not complete for parts of
II and III. New word apperances are also mixed up a little.
I now have a word list up to III-21 and will post it here as soon as I am through with it.
For the ZDT list I posted earlier, I will work through that too. I wonder how many lessons I can
put into one ZDT file? 15 lessons match about 100 words, which is maybe a bit too much for a
flashcard session.
Stay tuned!
bogleg -
Hi flameproof,
Sounds like a really cool project. I just want to add that the ZDT is capable of exporting its
lists to other formats as well. Currently it supports VTrain's rtf format right out of the box.
But it should be just as easy to add support via plugins for other programs like SuperMemo or
whatever your favorite flashcard program is. If people express an interest (and can give me the
format), I can add it. Hopefully this can make your work even more valuable and accessible to
everyone.
Keep up the good work!
Chris
flameproof -
the ZDT format is a simple text form. So should be a piece of cake to put it into other formats,
incl. Excel, or whatever. I'll be busy with work this week, but hope to update next weekend. The
one I posted earlier should then be sort of obsolete.
jdbarillari -
Hi flameproof,
I'm a big Pimselur fan. I whipped up a little web-based flashcard app (I wanted to have access to
flashcards from public computers where I couldn't install ZDT) and I'm curious if I can add your
Pimsleur wordlists to it (with full credit to you, of course). (Apologies for the broadcast
message; I couldn't figure out how to backchannel this.)
The site is http://hyquiz.com
Thanks in advance,
Joe

I just got Pimsleur from my friend and really like it. I'm learning unit 4 now. The bad thing
about Pimsleur is that it doesn't provide "text book", therefore, I try part 1 as follow. correct

Hello all,
I've been an avid user of adsotrans since I first found out about it, (a whopping 2 weeks ago).
However, last night Firefox did an automatic update and now adsotrans seems to be broken. I can
still activate it and it will pop up with definitions of the words, but the characters themselves
no longer show up in that little pop-up, (they are fine on the page itself, however). Perhaps the
update messed up the encoding for the plug-ins, somehow? Anyone got a good quick-fix for this?

Im having the same problem, except it is with the adsotrans "greasemonkey" plugin that I found on
this forum. After the Firefox auto-update the window pops up when I click the characters, but in
the window is mostly ???????Anyone know how to fix this?
sui.generis -
I thought that I was doing something wrong, but now that I think of it, the first time firefox
auto-updated to 1.5.0.1, it broke my 同文堂 plugin, and that didn't start working again until a
newer version of the plugin was released.
Instead of characters, mostly ??'s (and a few other random characters) show up. Some of them still
have the appropriate pop-ups with definition and pronunication, but some of them don't.
NateM -
Yup, that's what I'm getting too. I wonder if the updates are reverting the encoding for the
plug-ins back to a Western European setting somehow. I don't really know how to check that, though.
trevelyan -
Sorry guys. This looks like an encoding issue. Was fixing some issues with pinyin generation for
numbers and implementing a few new features. Must have screwed it up sometime.
Will get on it now.
trevelyan -
Fixed. It was a server problem -- nothing to do with Firefox. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just wondering if anyone has managed to pay the BNU fee via a bank transfer instead of by cash or
cheque. I know the transfer method of payment is offered at BLCU but apparently not at BNU. I
wrote to BNU and the lady replied that only payment by cash or cheque is accepted (which is a bit
of a problem for me).
Would appreciate any info on how to get round this.

If they won't give you the bank details for a transfer, there isn't much you can do about it.
Can only suggest you email again asking why not, and if it's because of high charges, offer to pay
them.
I'm about to apply to BNU as well. I'm sure if you convince them that they will get all the money
they expect, they'll take it any way they can :-)
bachir -
I had them by phone (0086-10-58807986 : english spoken) and they asked to mail the cash with
admission form by FEDEX (or equiv.) I have now to find 450 RMB in Switzerland !
adrianlondon -
Find a load of Chinese tourists, and say you're an art student who happens to have an ehxhibition
on.
Then suggest they try the great "Swiss Cheese ceremony".
Zhende ma? -
I think they can convert foreign currency at the local Bank of China branch. I guess Swiss Francs
would be ok, but you could send Euros too if you aren't sure. No chance of getting RMB outside of
the country (legally)

Quote:

I've been able to get RMB from UK banks - had to wait a week for the order to come in and the
exchange rate was laughable, mind. That was just before my first trip out, and I guess I had
visions of being stranded on the wrong side of the Great Wall unable to pay my Special Foreign
Friends Entry Fee or something.
In this case though, I'd just stick USD or Euro's cash in the envelope.
bagua -
Just for info
The travel company Thomas Cook in the uk will exchange pounds to RMB with one days notice. Most uk
banks will do it over two days. Travelex or american express at the airport will change at the
counter. I have never had a problem. The rate is about the same as in Beijing ( very little
difference ) There is a limit of 6000 RMB per person stated for persons entering China but on the
custom cards when you arrive it states an amount in cash not exceeding 20,000 RMB .
bachir -
some weeks later ... I had the details of the BNU bank account details to send the admission fees
... :
The Account No. of Beijing Normal University

I'm so glad I won't be the only Westerner! I heard a lot of the foreign students in Beijing are
Korean or Japanese (which, while exciting, means Chinese will be the common language). For anyone
who hasn't worked it out yet, BNU says you have to pay the tuition fees in cash. I emailed them to
confirm, and they said no cheques, no credit cards: cash. Eeeep!
adrianlondon -
Well, I finally submitted my application. I FedEx'd it to a friend of mine in Beijing who
delivered it in person to BNU and gave them the 450RMB cash.
Took ages to get the application stuff because BNU demanded a certified copy of my degree
certificate. Why is this necessary? Who knows. I graduated 15 years ago! Anyway, £22 poorer
thanks to Loughborough University, and £38 poorer due to FedEx, my application arrived.
Not processed, because I didn't provide my degree "transcript" from my university. Pleading with
them on the phone (The UK didn't provide transcripts back in 1991 you jobsworths, just let me
study Mandarin!!!) didn't work. Am now waiting for my old University to write "We didn't issue
transcripts back in the 90s, you jobsworths" on headed paper, which I then need to post to them.
Grief.

ENTERTAINMENT / Theater & Arts
Lance Bass Gets Corny for Broadway, Joining 'Hairspray' in August
(Playbill)
Updated: 2007-07-07 22:11
Joey Fatone, his boy-singer pal from the now-disbanded pop group, has
appeared as Mark in Rent and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. In
Hairspray, Bass will play Corny, the charming Baltimore TV dance-show
host, through Jan. 6, 2008, a spokesman said.
Bass will be with Hairspray during the period following the July release
of the movie version of the Marc Shaiman-Scott Wittman-Thomas Meehan-Mark
O'Donnell smash.
It remains to be seen if the Hollywood version will help goose box office
for the Broadway original; Chicago benefited from its film version.
Bass and his 'N Sync pals (including Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone,
Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez) were a music sensation in the last
decade, releasing albums "'N Sync," "Home for the Holidays," "Celebrity,"
"No Strings Attached," "The Winter Album."
Information about the group is still at www.nsync.com.
For more information about Hairspray, visit www.hairsprayonbroadway.com.
For more information about Mississippi native Lance Bass, visit
www.myspace.com/basslance.
The Hairspray troupe at the Neil Simon Theatre includes Paul Vogt as
Edna, Shannon Durig as Tracy, Alexa Vega as Penny, Jerry Mathers as
Wilbur, Ashley Parker Angel as Link Larkin, Tevin Campbell as Seaweed,
Darlene Love as Motormouth Maybelle and Naturi Naughton as Inez.
In Hairspray "it's 1962 - the '50s are out and change is in the air.
Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger
heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV
dance program, 'The Corny Collins Show' and, overnight, is transformed
from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size
trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning
princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a
television show without denting her 'do?"
Hairspray is directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry
Mitchell; scenic design is by David Rockwell; costume design is by
William Ivey Long; lighting design is by Kenneth Posner; and sound design
is by Steve C. Kennedy.
Hairspray will celebrate its fifth anniversary on Broadway in August.
It's the winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Trying to keep an open mind
By Tabitha (chinadaily.com.cn)

Nails screeching on a chalkboard. Teeth clinking on a fork. Slow drivers
in the fast lane. These are common minor annoyances that cause extreme
frustration to people in the United States.
But since I've been in China I haven't seen a chalkboard, I don't use a
fork and there's no such thing as a slow driver here.
So what are the things that personally drive me mad as an American living
in Beijing?
When dining out at a restaurant, nothing gets to me more than the
waitresses standing over the table waiting on you to order. It makes me
feel uncomfortable and rushed. I try to motion for them to leave but they
keep standing there.
At the end of dinner, splitting the bill between everyone is especially
troublesome when everyone only has100 yuan notes.
I think it is unacceptable to not wash your hands after using the
bathroom. I have seen this many times and, considering the conditions of
the bathrooms, this is difficult for me to turn a blind eye to.
Also, I really do not like traveling with five people because you always
have to get two cabs. I know this is a safety issue but more than once I
have seen Chinese people fit four in the back seat. As a foreigner, I
feel like I get the raw end of the deal in many circumstances.
However as a westerner I always try to keep an open mind and attempt to
assimilate with Chinese culture. Sometimes I am a messy eater and spit
things on the table and I even find myself ignoring the formation of
lines and jumping right up to the front. These are characteristics I've
learned from the Chinese.
Nevertheless I don't think I will ever get used to how blunt Chinese
people can be when talking about a person's appearance and how they seem
to be totally oblivious to other people's personal space.

From July 14 to 29, Doraemon, the world-popular Japanese cartoon
character will pop into children's dream world again as a Doraemon theme
park opens at Shanghai East Asia Exhibition Hall. [Photo:

It is hard for children to resist Doraemon, the famous fat cat-robot with
a big round head and a magic pocket on his tummy.
He pulls amazing futuristic gadgets from the pocket such as the dokodemo
door, which leads wherever you want to go, and the memory machine to help
his lazy friend Nobita grow up to be a responsible person.
From July 14 to 29, this world-popular Japanese cartoon character will
pop into children's dream world again as a Doraemon theme park opens at
Shanghai East Asia Exhibition Hall.
Covering 4,500 square meters, the Doraemon Theme Park will present a
happy atmosphere throughout the huge inflatable castles, animation
background photography, cosplay show and interactive games.
The "At-Will Gate" will lead children to Doraemon's magic world and let
them share the adventures with the dinosaurs, marine creatures and ETs
that Doraemon and his crew Nobita, Jyian and Dorami have had in the
comedy cartoon series.
Additionally, Doraemon spinoffs, including toys, clothes, stationery and
DVDs, are available.
On December 1, 1969, Doraemon arrived in the world and soon became one of
the most recognized faces in Japan. He was created by animators Hiroshi
Fujimoto who died in 1996 and Akido Motoo.
Fujimoto initially came up with the figure after tripping on his young
daughter's toy, hearing cats fight in the neighborhood and wishing he had
a machine to generate a new comics concept.
In the 1970s, the Doraemon animation series was a big hit that continued
through the 1980s and even into the 1990s. There are hundreds of manga
volumes and cartoon TV sitcoms, and a few movies based on the stories.
Ever since its birth, this cute robotic cat has also acted as the
childhood friend for many generations across the world.
"The Doraemon TV series provides a precious and happy childhood memory
for me," says 27-year-old financial executive Zhang Jian. "This classic
image still has the charm to touch children of today."
In the middle of July, a new feature, "Nobita's Dinosaur," will hit local
cinemas. It is based on Doraemon and Nobita's prehistoric adventure to
save the endangered dinosaurs. It's the first imported Doraemon movie.

Paris Hilton defends Britney
(Digital spy)
Updated: 2007-06-30 14:22
Paris Hilton has spoken out in defence of Britney Spears' parenting
skills.
Spears drew criticism in February 2006 when she was filmed driving with
her son Sean Preston, who was then a 19-month-old toddler, on her lap.
However, Hilton, who was released from jail on Tuesday after serving 23
days behind bars for driving while her licence was suspended, insisted
that Spears is a "good mum" who "loves her kids".
She said of Spears: "She's a sweet girl. She's a good mum. She loves her
children. I've seen her with her kids. She loves her kids. And I think
it's hard for anyone when you're in the spotlight so much. It's very
overwhelming at such, like, a young age."

Hilton doing much better in jail, mum says
(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-20 17:05
Paris Hilton is settling into her cell at an all-women's jail and is
doing better, her parents said after a weekend visit.
They said the 26-year-old socialite is passing the time at the Century
Regional Detention Centre in Lynwood reading letters from fans, relatives
and friends and reflecting on her life.
"Basically just reading and just sitting there thinking ... what she
wants to do with her life and the changes that she wants to make," Kathy
Hilton told Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren yesterday.
"She's never been alone so this is, as she calls it, a real time out,"
her mother said of Sunday's visit, where Hilton talked to her parents
from behind a glass partition.
Hilton's father, Rick, said she was doing "much better" and had given him
a handmade Father's Day card. "It was kind of cute," he said. "She had
written a card for me and in front of it was a cartoon and it showed me
holding her hand against the glass with her on the other side. Quite
touching."
Rick Hilton also denied rumours that his father had donated money to Los
Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca to garner favours for his daughter. He said the
donation was made 1? years ago, and it was just $US1000 ($NZ1324).
Hilton is expected to be released on June 25, when she will have served
about 23 days of a 45-day sentence.

McCartney's Starbucks album heats up U.S. charts
(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-14 08:05
LOS ANGELES - Paul McCartney reached his highest spot on the U.S. pop
charts in a decade on Wednesday with his first album for coffee retailer
Starbucks Corp., a sign that veteran artists can thrive outside major
labels.
"Memory Almost Full," the 21st solo album of McCartney's career, debuted
at No. 3, his highest ranking since the No. 2 start for "Flaming Pie" in
1997.
The album's first-week sales of 160,541 copies marked a 33 percent
improvement over those for "Flaming Pie," which kicked off with 121,000
units sold. The former Beatle's "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard,"
released in 2005, opened at No. 6 with 92,000 copies.
McCartney's performance is especially notable because the music industry
has been in a freefall for much of the past decade. Many artists have
seen their chart fortunes fade as consumers turned to online piracy and
other forms of entertainment. Labels and retailers have shrunk
accordingly.
"Memory Almost Full" marks the first release on Hear Music, the new label
formed by Starbucks and privately held jazz specialist Concord Music
Group. McCartney, who turns 65 next Monday, had spent most of his 45-year
career with EMI Group Plc., which still distributes the Beatles' catalog.
Starbucks, which aims to turn itself into a leisure destination that does
more than sell coffee, signed McCartney about three months ago after
learning that his EMI contract had lapsed. Its innovative marketing plans
melded with McCartney's desire to find a fresh way to promote his albums.
Last Monday, the day of its international release, Starbucks played the
album all day in its 10,000-plus stores around the world. The album was
released the following day in the United States.
In Britain, "Memory Almost Full" arrived at No. 5, surpassing the No. 10
debut and peak of "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard."
Music industry consultant Clark Benson said the partnership benefits both
sides. For Starbucks, there's a "brand benefit" in being associated with
an icon like McCartney.
For his part, McCartney can be assured of a better marketing push and
probably a more generous royalties deal than he could get at a major
label, said Benson, CEO and founder of market research firm Almighty
Institute of Music Retail.
A spokesman for McCartney declined to discuss the financial terms of the
musician's deal.
Starbucks helped Concord market the posthumous Ray Charles smash "Genius
Loves Company." But Starbucks has backed developing artists with limited
success, while its foray into movies last year with "Akeelah and the Bee"
was a flop.
The latest chart was led by new releases from two R&B singers: T-Pain's
"Epiphany," which sold 171,000 copies in the week ended June 10, and
Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad," which narrowly beat McCartney with sales
of 162,000 copies.
McCartney's first-week tally compares favorably with the recent debuts of
other veteran acts.
Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain" opened at No. 3 last month with over 150,000
copies sold, while the Elton John retrospective "Rocket Man: Number Ones"
entered at No. 9 with 49,000 copies in April, and Neil Young's "Live at
Massey Hall 1971" landed at No. 6 in March with 57,000.
